We have known for some time that “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner is interested in keeping the show going on AMC until season 7, and both he and star Jon Hamm have deals that run until that time.
With all of this information in mind, the following bit of news hardly comes as a surprise — series stars Vincent Kartheiser (Pete), Elisabeth Moss (Peggy), and January Jones (Betty) are all in talks to receive new contracts for two more years. If this happens, it will mean that the majority of the show’s primary cast will be under contract — though the status of John Slattery and Jessica Pare still remains unclear.
When it comes to Moss, this news does confirm that Peggy will still be an important part of the show despite leaving SCDP near the end of season 5 in order to pursue a higher-level job at another company. Meanwhile, Jones’ negotiations confirm that we are going to at least see some Betty moving forward after she was reduced to just a minor presence this past season due to her pregnancy. Even with that, though, it’s still hard to see her as a player in every episode consider that Don Draper is really her only connection to the rest of the cast — and he does not really have that big of a reason to contact her except to arrange custody for the children.
“Mad Men” season 6 should premiere in the spring of next year, though we are unlikely to find out much of anything about the plot before that time. Weiner is notorious for despising spoilers about his shows, and he prefers to keep everything under wraps until the episode actually airs.
