‘American Idol’ notes: Carrie Underwood and Joshua Ledet

Since we have such a major event to cover here in the premiere of Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away” music video, we are going to limit our new edition of “American Idol” notes to just two stories. Now that this has been said, let’s kick things off by taking a trip to a modern-day Oz.

The “Blown Away” video – Would it be an exaggeration to say that “Blown Away” is the finest music video that the season 4 winner has ever created? Not even in the slightest. This is one of the best country music videos we have seen not just of the year, but really ever since Carrie first emerged on the scene.

While the homage to “The Wizard of Oz” here is apparent, what really makes it work is some absolutely brilliant art direction that allows for some great contrast with light and shade, and imagery that does not play up the obvious. We love that the colors at the end of the video, while vibrant, still have an ethereal and dreamlike quality to them still. Therefore, it in many ways is symbolic of the hope that comes with a clean slate rather than just a literal representation of the after-effects.

This was a bold direction for Carrie to go in, and with her success it’s something that she didn’t even need to do — but the test of a true artist is how they decide to test themselves, and she just scored he highest grade we can hand out.

You can watch the video below beginning on August 1 — until that point, it is exclusive to E! News.

Joshua Ledet announces… – In other news, the reigning third-place finisher revealed on Twitter that he is already recording some music for his freshman release. We’re excited to hear what Ledet’s original sound is going to be, mostly because he’s in a bit of a pickle. Does he go with a gospel angle and compromise record sales, or will he try to jump into the mainstream with some music that focuses more on restraint? Personally, we actually prefer Joshua when he is eating a song’s lunch, like he did with “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” near the end of season 11.
