At Comic-Con in San Diego earlier this month, it was first revealed that cult sensation “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” was going to make its broadcast TV debut on The CW later this year — and now, we know the official premiere date.
At the network’s upfront presentation on Monday, programming head Mark Pedowitz said that the Joss Whedon production — which stars Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion and was filmed as a way to work around limitations during the Writers Guild of America strike in early 2008 — will premiere on Tuesday, October 9 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time. This means that the musical will follow up the second episode of “Hart of Dixie” season 2, which is probably not exactly the most logical lead-in ever considering that it appeals to a completely different audience. However, this does give The CW a full night of programming on Tuesdays prior to the premiere of “Emily Owens, M.D.” in this timeslot on October 16.
While there has (sadly) not been an official announcement yet regarding a “Dr. Horrible” sequel — which has been a topic of discussion for some time — Pedowitz did say that the airing of the original product could hopefully give the network a better opportunity to have a first crack at another installment should Whedon decide to create it down the road. Thanks to the days of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel” on The WB prior to the UPN merger, Whedon has some experience working with some of the people behind closed doors here. Of course, the biggest obstacle here is now securing a TV partner for a “Dr. Horrible 2” — it’s finding a way for all of the schedules to line up due to Whedon’s projects and Harris and Fillion’s respective gigs on “How I Met Your Mother” and “Castle.” It was a little easier during the writers’ strike, especially since “Castle” had yet to even premiere at that point.
Even if you’ve already watched this full musical online and on DVD, are you still going to watch it on TV just to give Whedon some addition support? If you want to see some other special programming that The CW is planning for early October, be sure to click here.
