‘American Idol’ notes: James Durbin, Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey

We’re looking across the board for our newest edition of “American Idol” notes, and covering in the process everything from a season 10 alum to the original winner of the show as a whole.

James Durbin’s new song – James has been touring all over America this summer, and while in a recent stop in Illinois the rocker decided to perform an acoustic version of his new song “In the Name of Love” (no relation to U2).

So how was it? It’s definitely a track with some great potential to be a classic power ballad for James, as he melody actually seems best suited for rock guitars and heavy drum beats — which isn’t exactly what you first think of when you hear the word “ballad.” We do very much love the lock James has going on at the moment, since it combines a little bit of 80s punk with a hairstyle that makes him look a little bit like a villain from a karate movie.

Kelly Clarkson takes on Britney Spears – It’s unfortunate that few people out there recognize just how great of a song Britney Spears had in “Everytime,” which to his day remains the best ballad the pop princess has ever done. Luckily, Kelly Clarkson is one of those rare people!

You’re probably aware by now that Kelly does a “fan request” portion of every one of her shows where she takes suggestions from the audience, and this time around she decided to perform the Spears song while in Las Vegas. Without really even going into an in-depth analysis of the performance, can’t we just say that this is incredible?

Simon talks Mariah Carey casting – Finally, we conclude with Simon Cowell continuing to sling mud on any reality show that is not his own. In talking about “American Idol’s” decision to hire Mariah Carey — a woman that he was supposedly considering for “The X Factor” at one point — he commented to reporters recently that he worries that the “We Belong Together” singer is too “nice” for the gig.

Um … if this was the case, why did you ever want her for your own show? It’s some surprising commentary from Simon, who has put a judge on his show in Britney Spears who many of people have concerns about, as well, when it comes to her generally-pleasant demeanor.
