2012 TCA Awards: ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Breaking Bad’ win big

On Saturday night, the Television Critics Association followed up their series of FX panel discussions by handing out some trophies for their annual awards ceremony — and i was only appropriate that at least one FX series in “Louie” was boldly recognized as he best that comedic TV has to offer. Does that make up for the show getting snubbed for the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy? Hardly.

Really, the only surprise at all from the list of winners below involves one show that did not pick up any trophies at all — “Mad Men.” “Game of Thrones” has to be feeling pretty good about its Emmy chances now thanks to scoring a big win here, as do both “Homeland,””Breaking Bad,” and “Downton Abbey.” Basically, all Drama Series nominees other than “Boardwalk Empire” seemingly have a chance of walking away with the award. (Check out our full piece on this very subject here.)

Individual Achievement in Drama: Claire Danes (“Homeland,” Showtime)
Individual Achievement in Comedy: Louis C.K. (“Louie,” FX)
Outstanding Achievement in News and Information: “60 Minutes” (CBS)
Outstanding Achievement in Reality Programming: “So You Think You Can Dance” (Fox)
Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming: “Switched at Birth” (ABC Family)
Outstanding New Program: “Homeland” (Showtime)
Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries and Specials: “Masterpiece: Downton Abbey” (PBS)
Outstanding Achievement in Drama: “Breaking Bad” (AMC)
Outstanding Achievement in Comedy: “Louie” (FX)
Career Achievement Award: David Letterman
Heritage Award: “Cheers”
Program of the Year: “Game of Thrones” (HBO)

he one thing that is unfortunate about these awards are that the TCA doesn’t really care much about performances, directing, or any of the technical categories — however, it is nice to see “Switched at Birth” especially get a little love as one of the most continually-overlooked series on TV.
