Oprah Winfrey may not have too many acting roles under her belt, but the talk-show giant has made such a tremendous impact on the entertainment industry that the Academy Awards has chosen to honor her in one of the best ways possible — an Honorary Oscar at the 3rd annual Governors Awards on November 12.
Specifically, Oprah is receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for all her work she has done with various charities around the world — in particular when it comes to her efforts in Africa. While the Academy may at first glance by a strange group to hand Oprah an award, she does have quite a few connections to the film industry. She earned an Oscar nod for her role in “The Color Purple,” and has also acted in “Native Son” and “Beloved.” As a producer, she was one of the driving forces behind both “The Great Debaters” and the Oscar-winning “Precious.”
In addition to Winfrey, actor James Earl Jones (otherwise known to many of us as Darth Vader) will be receiving an honorary award for some of his own contributions to the industry over the years (which include over fifth acting credits).
Do you think Oprah is deserving of an Oscar?
