‘American Idol’ notes: Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery, Kelly Clarkson

After focusing more on some recent contestants on our “American Idol” notes a little bit earlier in the day Thursday, we’re not taking a little bit of a journey into the past with two winners and one runner-up who have become household names.

What’s Scotty recording now? – Based on some posts that the season 10 champ made on his Twitter account, it’s pretty clear that Scotty McCreery is back in the recording studio working on his second album. Just what sort of album is it? The answer may surprise you.

According to a now-deleted Twitter message (which you can see over on Mjsbigblog), it appears as though Scotty is working on a Christmas record that could work to bridge the gap between his debut and upcoming sophomore release of original music. Although this is unconfirmed, it does seem to be a pretty brilliant idea when you think about it. This will allow some fans the opportunity to get some more music faster, and Christmas albums are a great way to increase exposure during a festive time of year. Just look at how much play Justin Bieber got out of his “Under the Mistletoe” disc.

Kelly Clarkson covers “Wide Awake” – Want to hear something phenomenal? While performing at a concert in California, the original “Idol” champ decided to take it upon herself to perform a cover of Katy Perry’s current hit. The truth is that we’re not necessarily huge fans of the original recording, bu we really love this. Kelly brings so much emotion and vulnerability to the track that it helps us to forget that we’re not going to be seeing her on TV this week for the first time all summer.

Lauren Alaina’s tribute – Finally, we have some audio (via Taste of Country) of Lauren Alaina doing a tribute to legendary country artist Kitty Wells while at one of Nashville’s most legendary venues in the Grand Ole Opry.

If there is any tangible evidence of just how far Lauren has come since her time on the show, this is it — not only is it a great performance, but it’s also a great expression of music history.
