CBS has announced hat Penn is set to co-star alongside the previously-announced Chris Smith in the new pilot “Ex-Men,” which centers around some people living in a housing complex following some painful and often controversial breakups. His character’s name is Gil, and he moved in to this place after supposedly being caught having an absolutely terrible affair. This series is executive-produced by Rob Greenberg of “How I Met Your Mother,” and it is getting set to likely launch at some point in 2013.
Penn is no stranger to comedy, having first made a name for himself in the “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” movies. He has also appeared in multiple seasons of “House” before his character took his own life — though even with that, he ended up returning as an apparition of sorts during the series finale.
Even though “Ex-Men” is still in the early stages, CBS already seems to have a great deal of confidence in it. After all, it is rare that you hear news about a pilot for next year in July, which is a time when you are spending most of your time preparing for what is going to be coming up on the fall schedule. So what’s the reason for the increased focus here? With “How I Met Your Mother” and “Two and a Half Men” both getting set to wrap up soon, the network needs to make sure that it has some other potential hits on standby ready to take over.
