I agree with the article that it does make huge difference for the writers to know either the season 5 is happening or not.

There have been more instances when viewers have been left up in the air when programs are canceled (Home Fires, for example, when season 3 was about to begin filming just as it was canceled) than ones when a hasty conclusion has been tacked on to the last episode when the bottom fell out (Indian Summer). Since when does anyone care about the viewers?
