There’s almost no question that the “American Idol” landscape has been turned on its head in the past 24 hours. There are going to be massive changes to the show’s audition format courtesy of people getting the opportunity to try out online, Mariah Carey is joining the show as a replacement to Jennifer Lopez, and there are still other spots on the panel to be filled.
With all of this in mind, it’s no surprise to hear that all of the contestants who just finished their run on the show months ago have something interesting to say on the subject. Speaking to Yahoo! Music, Jessica Sanchez appeared to be the contestant who was the most shocked and sudden by the news of the judges’ exit:
“I was a little bit shocked. It won’t be the same.”
Meanwhile, some of the other contestants were a bit more opinionated — including Skylar Laine, who said that Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez leaving the show may have actually been the best thing for them to get back to some of what they actually loves doing the most:
“With Steven, it’s better for him. He has to be a little bit more reserved on the show, and now he can go out there and focus on his first love, which we all know is Aerosmith. And Jennifer, that girl is a mover and shaker, and she’s always on to the next thing, you know? That’s just how she’s always been, and that’s how she’s gotten as big as she is. We wish her all the luck on her next venture.”
While the season 11 contestants were on the show, the judges were under fire for much of the time that they were either unbalanced with their critiques (especially when it came to eventual winner Phillip Phillips) or that they were simply too nice as a whole. It’s too early to tell whether a new panel fronted by Carey will change that, but it is at least a change.
