Strategically thinking I don’t think they are as slim as you think they are for the following reasons:

I am hoping that TNT calling it the last season will actually help to boost it to get it onto CBS, where I am sure it will be treated better. I am reminded of the extra boost it gave R&I. It would be interesting to see if potential new homes look at “total” numbers, which even by TNT’s count have it at 10 million versus looking at just live viewing numbers. Also, the fact that it is still the #2 scripted on cable!

In my research, when CBS took on Jag, its total viewership numbers were 11.5 million ON BROADCAST. Major Crimes is at 10 million (TNT’s numbers) ON CABLE. Granted, CBS produces NCIS, BUT WB has an established relationship/partnership with CBS. Can’t forget that WB already supplies CBS with their number 1 and 2 shows.

One thing I do have to mention is that you mention the show’s age. If you study similar franchises “on the big 4”, this franchise is actually a baby. Law and Order is about to turn 30 and Jag/NCIS is almost 20. The Closer/Major Crimes is 13 with untapped spin off potential that stupidly wasn’t mined by Reilly’s TNT. Major Crimes SOB had the potential to bring in a younger demo with a TESTED spin off. I don’t think another network is going to be as short sighted as Reilly’s TNT and as evaluations are being done for potential pick up, I don’t think wherever it may land is going to give up those 10 million viewers and the opportunity for franchise expansion.
