I respectfully disagree with Jay and Upton as a couple.
Nobody is saying that Jay should remain celibate or not get involved with *anyone*, ever.
Of course Erin has no claim over him, she left him! Broken and hurt ,with a ring in his pocket. Without so much as a goodbye. Of course he will someday move on.
But it would be so very wrong for him to get involved with Upton as his partner. Why is it inevitable? Is she the last woman in the world?

I hope the writers reconsider their intent to give Upton a love interest within the unit. What happened to Voight's no in house romance rule? It seems they have completely forgotten about it, and are keen on turning this unit into a high school prom, where everyone is paired up. This is not Chicago 90210, guys! nor do we want it to be.

Beyond that, IMO it would ruin Jay's character even further (that process started in season 4 with the hidden wife and the senseless way he just left Erin). He would just be this predictable, good looking a-hole cop who serially dates his female partners. When what he and Erin had - at least till the writers started destroying them in season 4 - was so much more than that. And while it doesn't mean he shouldn't move on at some point, it just shouldn't be with his female partner, who happens to look JUST like Erin.

I'd like to see Jay be front and center and get some good stories for his character. Stories that have nothing to do with Erin, for a change. The premiere was a good start, hope they continue that route. I just really really wish they'd leave his love life alone, at least for now. When the time comes for him to be out there and date again, they should find a nice girl for him (unless there's a chance of a reunion with Erin...a girl can hope right?)

Great episode. And without Erin taking up all the screentime, Jay finally got a chance to shine. So did everyone else, and it was a long time coming. I'm loving Jay and Hailey's partnership already. Actually, I already love her character more than Erin's. And, I'm enjoying the show much more without Erin. Her absence was handled well for both Voight and Halstead.

I'm excited to see Jay and Hailey's partnership/friendship develop. And, I'd actually love to see them together eventually. I think it's inevitable, so it'll probably happen regardless - even if it's not this season. Yesterday, I just got a really strong partnership vibe from them. But, they were bonding a little in that scene after the press conference where Hailey shared that she'd been in a similar situation, told Jay to call if he needed anything, and gave him advice about talking to the girl's mother.

We already know Hailey will be getting a love interest within the unit, and it's either going to be Jay or Adam IMO. Atwater's love interest seems to be that tipster from the morgue he was flirting with last night, so cute. It's already been revealed Antonio will get back together with Sylvie. We know Burgess will be focusing on her career, and she told Adam she'd met someone (not sure if she was bluffing or not). And, it's already been said Jay will be a more viable love interest for someone around mid-season. Burzek will most likely get back together eventually, so I could see Hailey getting involved with Adam in the meantime. That still doesn't rule out Jay, though. Everyone remembers how Linstead developed, right? lol And, Jay's ex-wife was also his partner in the Rangers. If it doesn't happen this season, it could happen next season or down the road.

Erin's apartment is empty, and she won't return Jay's phone calls. She's gone, and Voight made that pretty clear to Jay. This idea that some people have that Jay shouldn't get involved with Hailey is ridiculous. Erin left without telling him, and has completely ignored all his phone calls. She has no claim over him anymore, and he's not her property. He can and should date whoever he wants. They were already broken up when she left, so that relationship has been over for a while. It's completely unrealistic that Jay should be celibate for the rest of the show. Come on, people. Get real.
