If you thought that season 8 of “How I Met Your Mother” was going to be he final season, it looks like we have one pretty simple message to pass along — think again.
According to a report from Variety, CBS and 20th Century Fox (who produces the show) area already starting to have preliminary talks to bring Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Segel, and the rest o the cast back for what would be a ninth and final season airing in 2014. Considering that every single cast member would need to sign a new contract in order to make this deal happen, this may not be a negotiation that we see an end to right away. Segel in particular has said that he would like to move on to other things, though he is also happy to see the show through and finish its run. There is also the issue of signing executive producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas — who also have a show coming on Fox at midseason entitled “The Goodwin Games” — to a new contract.
At the end of the day, we see fans being pretty divided over a potential ninth season. While season 7 was not as strong emotionally or in terms of laughs as season 6 — which was in our mind a banner year for some of the actors — there were still laughs to be had. We also don’t mind having two more seasons so long as the scripts stay funny and there is enough story to justify it, though we do worry that halfway through the final year, Ted Mosby will run out of stories and we will limp along to an inevitable conclusion with kids in flashforwards who are old enough to be adults. Meeting the mother is almost assured to not equal the years of hype (it’s really impossible for it to), but this show is more about the journey. Luckily, we’ve enjoyed almost every minute of it.
