Before we even turn to the news that is going to be coming out courtesy of “Once Upon a Time” at Comic-Con this weekend, we have to first touch on a new storyline that could be particularly interesting to watch throughout the early portion of season 2 — the fact that Regina is connected in a way to Rumpelstiltskin that few would see coming.
Speaking to TV Guide on this very subject, executive producer Edward Kitsis advised all of us to go back to a certain season 1 episode to put the dots together for a story that could very well change how we feel about the Evil Queen and Rumpelstiltskin’s relationship entirely:
“In the episode ‘Stable Boy,’ [Barbara Hershey’s Cora] talked about how she was the miller’s daughter and she had to do a lot to keep Regina. If I remember correctly, the miller’s daughter was given to a prince because she could spin straw into gold. Therefore, she owed Rumpelstiltskin a baby. The question is, is that baby Regina? … When you get that Regina is the baby that’s promised to Rumpel, then you’re like, what did Cora do to get out of a deal with a man who usually kills people?”
With all of this in mind, it seems like a given that Hershey (who did have an option for season 2 in her contract) is certainly going to be seen again. The question now is just if she is going to be alive in Storybrooke, or if her character will appear only in a series of flashbacks in the fairy tale world that was.
In this same interview, Kitsis also makes another rather fascinating statement when it comes to magic — only a certain type of person is able to wield it, but we do not know just yet what sort of qualifications that person has to meet to make it happen.
