Over the past few days, all we have talked about is whether or not Jennifer Lopez is going to return to “American Idol” for another go-around. As it turns out, it looks as though we really should have been talking about Steven Tyler instead.
In a new statement, the rocker has announced that he is leaving the show after two seasons in order to focus on his band Aerosmith’s new release in November, and the touring commitments that are going to come as a result of that:
“After some long…hard…thoughts… I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress American Idol before she boils my rabbit. I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I’m back – but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I’ve got two fists in the air and I’m kicking the door open with my band. The next few years are going to be dedicated to kicking some serious a– – the ultimate in auditory takeover.
“On Nov. 6, we are unleashing our new album, Music from Another Dimension on the Earth, Moon, Mars, and way beyond the stars.
“Idol was over-the-top fun, and I loved every minute of it. Now it’s time to bring Rock Back. ERMAHGERD.”
Tyler had a bit of an uneven run on the show. While he was well-praised for being an entertaining presence during the audition rounds — and his rock star lifestyle always made for interesting fashion discussion and stories from a day gone by — he wasn’t really much of a judge in the technical sense of the word. His critiques of the contestants mostly consisted of “that was beautiful,” and it at ties felt as though he was tuning out of the live shows and imagining himself back in the recording studio.
Based on the rumors, Adam Lambert has to be considered the frontrunner or the new spot on the panel — though whether or not there will be a need for another judge is unclear. Jennifer Lopez said on “The Today Show” Thursday morning that she has not made up her mind yet when it comes to her future on the show, though she is at the moment strongly considering saying goodbye to a show that has in many ways brought her career back to the highest level.
What’s your reaction to Tyler’s exit? We want to hear from you below! If you want to hear some more of the latest judging rumors, be sure to check out our story here.
