It’s hard enough this year that “So You Think You Can Dance” is airing only once a week, but thanks to a rather unfortunate change in the schedule last week involving the 4th of July holiday, it has now been two weeks since the entire top 20 has been announced.
This delay is bad news for the dance competition, especially when you remember that the ratings took a bit of the fall the last time the show did air. Are the dancers still worth watching, though? Definitely. We’re not quite sure if there is anyone on the level of last year’s winner Melanie Moore or runner-up Sasha Mallory, but there are still some people who are an absolutely thrill to watch. Daniel Baker is a ballet dancer that we remember by name, and this season also has the first-ever bellydancer in Janelle Issis.
What we are excited about now that the live rounds are beginning is seeing how executive producer and head judge Nigel Lythgoe has managed to keep the show exciting (and the same amount of focus on the contestants) despite the show only airing once a week this year. The elimination structure is going to be different (we will find out more about that on the show), and we don’t know if we will see as many solos or group numbers as a result.
Even if the show’s cycles are shorter this year, we hope that people still remember to give “So You Think You Can Dance” a shot tonight. There are few other shows that combine athleticism and art quite like it, and really force their contestants to approach dance from every angle to show what they can do.
