Out of all of the various covers we have heard of the Carly Rae Jepsen hit “Call Me Maybe” over the past several months, this one has to be one of the best. Why? Let’s just say that it features a blue monster singing about his love for tasty treats.
This song is entitled “Share It Maybe,” and is pretty self-explanatory once you listen to it — Cookie Monster is featured front and center talking about his love of cookies, and trying to encourage everyone around him to be kind enough to hand some of the tasty goodies out for him to enjoy. It’s pretty cute, simple, and also funny — even if our resident monster has a hard time keeping up with the lyrics occasionally in the song.
So why would a show for toddlers and children spoof something in pop culture? It’s the same reason that they have poked fun at “True Blood” or brought celebrity guests like Ty Burrell on the show before — it’s for the adults watching. Studies have shown that children who watch educational TV with their parents are often able to learn better thanks to the interactive environment, so the folks at the Sesame Workshop have worked hard especially in the past few years to ensure that some of their sketches are appealing to children as well as adults.
However, this strategy has not always went off without a hitch. As a matter of fact, a musical number featuring Katy Perry was pulled from the internet and never aired on TV in 2010 after some parents complained about the singer’s dress and that they, in the words of Katy’s then-love Russell Brand, did not want their show to be sponsored by the letter D.
In going back to this specific Cookie Monster video, where do you think this ranks compared to some of the other great “Call Me Maybe” covers?
