On Monday, we first posted about the rumor that is flying around the internet that Adam Lambert could somehow return to the show in “American Idol” that launched his career, and ultimately become the first former contestant to end up being the judge. Adam already holds the distinction of the first former contestant to be a mentor, so for him to continue blazing a trail from that standpoint does make some sense.
But is the season 8 star really in talks with the show’s producers and Fox? Let’s not get too hasty here. Speaking in an interview on HLN’s “Showbiz Tonight” — which was primarily to promote the launch of his new series “Opening Act” on Monday — executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said that nobody from the “American Idol” camp has talked about anything with Adam just yet:
“I can confirm with you that I have not been speaking to Adam Lambert, but there are going to be lots of names coming up now … It’s a bit like…when they were looking for judges for X Factor. Everybody’s name came up. It’s going to be the same with American Idol.”
What is especially interesting about this comment is that Nigel is all but admitting that Jennifer Lopez will not be back for another season, and that the show is indeed looking to shake up the judging panel in some sort of major way following the announcement that Britney Spears and Demi Lovato have joined “The X Factor.” Some of the names that are currently circulating include Miley Cyrus, Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas, and pop superstar Katy Perry — even though she has already said that she has no interest in serving as one of the judges for the time being.
