In addition to your very astute observations, I would only add that her last statement seems to be an effort to self-soothe. Indeed, all doors were closed when Claire came back, and Frank made sure they stayed bolted, even when he knew to the contrary. Claire could not rear Brianna in Scotland without Jamie, much less guarantee they’d both survive childbirth. Yes, it was the only logical answer, which Claire finally admitted.

And Frank’s “conditions” to which Claire agreed pretty much stomped on any hope she might secretly harbor in the ensuing 20 years. But as you so eloquently say, ‘the heart wants what the heart wants,’ I can only imagine it took years and years for Claire to accept that Jamie was truly lost to her ~ but not really ever letting go. Because, in reality, one never lets go of a love like that and much self-soothing required to keep one’s sanity. You simply learn how to carry those scars and walk upright.

Can’t honestly blame Frank – he was forced into an untenable position and did what he needed to do. But I’m happy he obligingly died when he did.

Just my thoughts …
