For me, nothing can replace the Blue Ridge Mountains. If the show gets picked up for any more seasons, Fraser’s Ridge would be in the next 5 seasons starting with season 4. That is plenty of time to get familiar with a crew :)

I do think Scotland can easily double for North Carolina. All that is really needed is lots and lots of trees and some very old mountains. Scotland has both as far as I know. The unique haze “smoke” always present in the Great Smokey Mountains and Appalachians around Black Mountain could be added. And the coastal scenes could be easily duplicated I believe. I can see the value of working with the same crew in familiar settings.
