Independence Day may not exactly be one of the biggest nights of the year for good scripted television, but there are a number of performance specials on the air that give plenty of the biggest stars in television the opportunity to have their voices heard on a big stage.
Amber Riley – The “Glee” star took to the stage on the PBS special “A Capitol 4th” in order to perform a pair of soul classics — “River Deep, Mountain High” and “Proud Mary.” After hearing her sing here, we really don’t have any idea at all how this young woman does not have a record coming out in the near future. Riley never seems to be given her due attention in the music business, just as her character of Mercedes Jones looks to be getting the shaft on season 4 of the show.
Megan Hilty – During the same special, the “Smash” star hit the stage to perform what are best known as some of the most patriotic songs in the history of music. There’s a bit of “You’re A Grand Ol’ Flag,” a tribute to Yankee Doodle Dandy, and a few lines from “God Bless America” thrown in here. In keeping with her theatre roots, the entire performance certainly carried with it a distinct Broadway feel. Her dress even looks like something that Betsy Ross would have designed herself.
Javier Colon – We have given both “The Voice” and Javier Colon some grief over the past year for not exactly hitting it out of the park when it comes to record sales, but we actually think that this performance of “Stand By Me” by Javier here is really nice. There are some soulful melodies, instrumentation that never ventures into “over-the-top territory,” and a nice dedication to some of the men and women who have served our country over the years.
If you want to check out some other patriotic July 4 performances, be sure to look at what “American Idol” stars Phillip Phillips and Jennifer Hudson did to ring in the holiday in a musical manner.
