For our Thursday edition of “American Idol” notes, we are talking largely about some videos in celebration of the Fourth of July — including the reigning champ performing for the very first time since undergoing kidney surgery last month.
Phillip sings “Home” – For the PBS special “A Capitol 4th,” Phillip Phillips took to the stage to sing his coronation song on Washington DC. After first saying that he wasn’t quite sure how he felt about the song (mostly because it was not something that he himself would write), he has since warmed up to the track.
In the video below, you can actually see that Phillip has added a little bit of his own flair to the song since we past heard it — complete with some harmonies, horns, and some big triumphant drums to cap it all off. As for him shouting “Home” on a few occasions, we’re not quite so sure how we feel about that.
Overall, Phillip managed here to take a pretty low-key track, and suddenly make it appropriate for Independence Day in one of the most patriotic cities in America.
Jennifer Hudson in Boston – For her own holiday concert, Jennifer Hudson was in Boston to perform with the legendary Boston Pops — and she gave a performance of a “Dreamgirls” classic that was more than a little bit memorable.
The song specifically here was “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” which we saw performed rather masterfully by Jennifer Holliday and Jessica Sanchez during the season 11 finale back in May. Of course, Hudson completely nails it — which isn’t exactly a shocker since she has performed it many times before.

Kelly Clarkson’s major honor – As if Kelly Clarkson didn’t already hold enough “American Idol”-related titles, she also now has this. In a new statement per The Hollywood Reporter, it was announced that “Stronger” — boosted by its 3.51 million copies sold — is now the best-selling single from a former show contestant of all time. She has passed Carrie Underwood — who has still sold more albums in the United States than any other past contestant — in obtaining the honor.
“Stronger” is Kelly’s third #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 behind “A Moment Like This” and “My Life Would Suck Without You.” It’s still a shocker to us that “Since U Been Gone” never hit #1.
