Paul McDonald releasing new album shortly after ‘American Idol’ tour

Out of all the contestants on this past season of “American Idol,” it’s probably safe to label Paul McDonald as one of the most invested in the songwriting world. Not only was he one of the few singers in the competition to perform an original song for his “sing for your life” performance before getting onto the live shows, but he was also the one most interested in playing his own music rather than covers following that point.

Thanks to knowing this information, it probably doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone that Paul (who is the frontman of The Grand Magnolias) told The Nashville Scene that it is his intention to release a new album soon after his time on the show’s tour is over in September — after all, he did spend most of his time on the show recording:

“I remember they would come in and say, ‘Paul, have you learned your song for next week?’ And I’d be like, ‘No, but check out this new one I wrote.’ And they’d say, ‘Dude, you’re going to get kicked off the show!’ Which I ended up doing.”

Lately, much of the attention surrounding Paul has had to do with his engagement to “Twilight” star Nikki Reed — so it is nice to see some of the attention put back on his music.
