Ann Curry fallout: ‘Good Morning America’ beats ‘Today’ on Friday

So far, it’s not looking like NBC made a great choice in handling the Ann Curry firing the way that they did. One day after the journalist was dismissed from “The Today Show” after some lower ratings, the show was beaten by its rival “Good Morning America” in total viewers.

Overall, 398,000 more viewers ended up tuning in to the Friday “GMA” broadcast, even if “Today” did end up winning the race by a close margin in the coveted 25-54 demographic. The battle between these two shows was hardly a battle at all back when Katie Couric or Meredith Vieira was hosting the morning show alongside Matt Lauer — however, all of this changed when Curry first joined the show, and it was defeated by the first time in over a decade earlier this year for a full week of programming.

“Today” has already hired Savannah Guthrie as its new co-host alongside Lauer, and the hope here for them is that this week off for Lauer will give viewers some time to forget about some of the drama that befell the show over the past several months, and allow it ultimately to come on the air with as close of a clean slate as it really can get. Even with this, though, viewers are not a forgiving bunch most of the time — and Curry’s diehard fans have already made their intention to move over to “GMA” pretty clear.
