‘The Smurfs’ closer than expected to ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ at box office

Who would have thought that a crew of tiny blue creatures could actually end up overtaking one of the most-hyped original movies of the summer? Based on the first full day at the American box office, it’s certainly possible.

After just one full day of receipts, “Cowboys & Aliens” and “The Smurfs”¬†grossed an estimated $13-13.5 million. When it comes to the Jon Favreau-directed genre mash-up, this is a bit of a disappointing number considering the star power that is in this movie courtesy of Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig. Right now, expectations are for “Cowboys” to end up grossing around $38 million for the full weekend.

Meanwhile, no one expected “The Smurfs” to perform so well, and it is even overcoming negative reviews to draw in the key family crowd. While a first-place finish is still unlikely, this race is turning out to be far closer than anyone projected going into this weekend.

As for the other new release of the weekend, Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling’s “Crazy, Stupid, Love” is expected to gross around $19 million, which is a nice total for fourth place. (“Captain America: the First Avenger” is expected to pull in another $25 million this weekend.)
