Rather than trying to rush some music out to consumers following their time on “The X Factor” last fall, the girls from Little Mix have taken their time in putting out some new music that will hopefully expand upon their already-devoted fanbase. So was this a worthwhile gamble? Read on to find out.
On paper, the girl group’s first single “Wings” plays out like you would expect it to — it’s upbeat, pop-focused, and it gives all of the ladies an opportunity to stand out at various moments in the song. It also feels age-appropriate, and should make young women relate to them rather than, to quote Tulisa Contostavlos, fear that they are out to steal their boyfriends.
The biggest problem with the song, unfortunately, is that it also feels a bit too predictable from the group. While being confident and not letting negativity get you down is a fantastic message, we wish the message could have been a little more subtle in the music. It’s also a bit like watching an Aaron Sorkin TV series — it’s talkier than it needs to be, and somewhere it could have benefited from a “less is more” approach so that there is more attention given to the melody, which gets a little bit lost in the midst of the vocals.
Now, we turn to the positives. The backing beats on “Wings” are fantastic, and it feels a little bit like a combination of Beyonce’s “Girls (Who Run the World)” and a nationals performance from the cast of “Glee.” With its message being what it is, and with these girls staying in the headlines over the past few months thanks for reasons unrelated to music (thank Perrie Edwards and a certain One Direction member for that), this song is poised to be a pretty big hit to kickstart the group’s career.
