While it may not be the same Journey that you once knew, the legendary rock group still rocked out the stage Friday morning on “The Today Show.”
For those a bit unaware of the band’s history, longtime lead singer Steve Perry left the band back in 1998, and they have used a number of different lead singers until they discovered a gem in Arnel Pineda — a man from the Philippines whose performances first surfaced on YouTube. While his voice does not perfectly match the pipes of Perry, he has managed to get as close as just about anyone over the past decade.
What makes this performance by the band all the more entertaining is simply this — no matter how much the group manages to age, “Don’t Stop Believin'” is a song that still draws a crowd. “The Sopranos” were first responsible for “bringing the song back” from the 1980s in many ways — and then “Glee” turned it into a smash hit all over again. (It is the only track from the last millennium on iTunes‘ top 25 most-downloaded songs ever.)
Do you find this Journey performance to still be “a Journey performance” even without Perry fronting the band?
