Are you ready for a “Fashion Star” shocker? Despite being one of the stronger pieces of the puzzle from our standpoint during season 1, Elle Macpherson has just announced that she is not going to be back on the NBC reality show when it starts shooting season 2 a little later this summer.
The 48-year old modeling icon told the New York Post about her decision to leave the show in a new interview, and also made sure to add that she is still going to have a play in the show’s production moving forward:
“I have been involved with Fashion Star from the beginning, and am very proud to see it come to life, not only in America but globally … The show is in great hands, and although I will not be hosting this season, I will still be very involved [and] will be reviewing the format for the upcoming season.”
There are reports floating around out there that the show, in an attempt to give more time to focus on the contestants, may not even have a host for its second season in order allow the celebrity mentors and the buyers to introduce the segments and communicate more with the contestants. (H&M is reportedly not returning next season, which means that another store will join Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue.)
Unfortunately, it really seems as though NBC is trying its best here to fix something that was never the show’s biggest problem to begin with. While it’s understandable that they want to keep the star power going by having Nicole Richie and Jessica Simpson around, they would actually be better suited moving them to a hosting or co-hosting position, doing away with the mentors, and then let the buyers do the critiquing. There’s no need for six people to comment on every article of clothing that hits the runway, and in order for the designers to be successful after the show people need to know who they are.
