At the end of “The Big Bang Theory” last season, we actually saw what was (gasp!) a sweet moment for Sheldon as he and Amy finally held hands for the first time. For a man who thinks that physical intimacy is the equivalent of the black death, this was a major step forward in him getting close to having a real relationship.
But does this mean that the two characters are going to continue to make great progress in season 6 of the “Big Bang Theory“? Far from it. As a matter of fact, Mayim Bialik tells Digital Spy that these two are not necessarily guaranteed to make more progress, and when you consider the delicate nature of Sheldon’s general countenance, it is best to keep this relationship as a slow build:
“I really feel like the art of courtship has largely been lost, especially where I come from, so I think it’s really sweet that we’re showing a courtship … We’re showing a relationship that’s not in a hurry. Amy obviously would like to go faster than Sheldon, but that was a really, really sweet moment.
“And I think just as easily as that happened it can unhappen, and we can go back to the way things were before that happened.”
The benefits in handling the relationship in such a way should be obvious. In a show where so many of the lead geeks are starting to get involved with other women (almost to its detriment at times), Sheldon’s feelings about dating and relationships keep him grounded in a way so that he does not lose a sense of self. Do we feel bad for Amy at times because of it? Definitely, but Sheldon being Sheldon is a key component in the show continuing to be as successful as it is.
Season 6 of “The Big Bang Theory” will premiere in September, and hopefully at that time we will get a better impression of just where this relationship is or isn’t going. Do you want to see Sheldon and Amy take their relationship to the next level at a faster pace or are you happy with the slower speed it’s progressing at?
