If someone starts a fire on “The Office” this coming season, it is probably not going to be Ryan.
After being one of the key figures on the show since its very beginning back in 2005, B.J. Novak is, according to TV Guide, choosing to reduce his role in the series following the exit of his friend Mindy Kaling to her new show “The Mindy Project.” He will still make occasional appearances as the temp-turned-executive-turned-addict, and take part in some of the show’s writing, though less than he has in recent years.
If you look at the history of “The Office” over the years, you will probably see that Ryan’s storyline has been one of the strangest out of all the characters on the show. His best days were really when he was a lowly temp who was constantly the target of Michael Scott’s secret obsessions, but once he moved to New York to take a position as Michael’s boss the show quickly ran out of ways to use him. His dismissal from the corporate office really should have been Ryan’s exit from the show, but producers understandably loved Novak so much that they had to find a way to keep him around in some capacity. It seemed as though he was starting to win Kaling’s Kelly Kapoor over with some of his bizarre charms at the end of last season, but we have a feeling her exit is going to be explained this fall by her deciding to be with her doctor boyfriend (played by Sendhil Ramamurthy) and moving out of Scranton.
Are you going to miss Ryan as Novak takes a step away from this series, or do you think it really was this character’s time to ride off into the sunset?
