For far too long, he was just “the Ferg,” sort of like one of those trash can liners –used but rarely thought of.
Yes, I agree with all your suggestions. Ferg should become a husband and father. I’d like to see him being given more leeway when it comes to taking the lead on investigations, and also, I think your idea of Ferg as the mentor is excellent.

I’d like to know more about Ferg’s backstory to flesh out his character.
Ferg should continue to be a character who is loyal to Walt, but not unaware of his boss’s weaknesses. I think Walt, Vic and Ruby make each other tick, and it’d be nice to see the four continue into eternity.
