This was a tough Wednesday night in the world of network television, as a number of shows either dropped or started out low. Do we blame the competition, the warm weather, or just that some of these episodes were akin to the calm before their respective storms? We’re going to check “all of the above” here.
Fox – We don’t know if it was the Olympic Trials or “America’s Got Talent” competing with it for an hour, but “So You Think You Can Dance” had its lowest rating of the season in 2.0 for its episode introducing the top 20 to the world. It will probably recover next week, and it better if Nigel Lythgoe wants to make his dream of an early pickup come true.
NBC – As we predicted, “America’s Got Talent” was hurt slightly by the dance competition, but it did still win the night with a 2.8 rating and an impressive total of over 10 million viewers. This was its first Wednesday airing of the season, and will not be shifted in its timeslot again until we near the very end of the season.
ABC – The only new program here was the debut of the Canadian drama “Final Witness,” and its 1.0 rating may prove that “Rookie Blue” is the exception rather than the rule when it comes to shows from north of the border doing well in America.
CBS – As for The Eye, “Dogs in the City” remained in the doghouse with its 0.9 rating that will surely make it sent to the pound for good as soon as “Big Brother 14” premieres next month. At the moment, the network is really just buying their time since repeats would probably not fare much better. This way, they can at least say they let the show run its course.
