I'm not sure Walt is the kind of man that can be happy with another woman after having been married to Martha. He just can't seem to move on beyond their relationship and I think he had the most chemistry with Donna but couldn't move forward with it.

I hope he hasn't forgotten his statement about Henry "never going back there again" when he finds out that Henry is Hector. I hate to see a friendship of that magnitude just dissolve because of Walt's tunnel vision regarding Nighthorse. He needs to step back and reassess the whole picture. Maybe that would make him come to terms with Kady working for Nighthorse and bring them back to their previous relationship. It's sad to see how estranged they are.

A cooperative working relationship with Mathias would be a boon to all of the locals.

I hope that smarmy lawyer gets run over by a herd of wild horses.

I think Walt should continue on as Sheriff --Longmire as anything else is unthinkable. He should always be the fiercely independent man of justice, roaming the hills in his Bronco. The Bronco is as much a character in this show as anyone else.
Cady and Walt should find peace with one another, and each other's independence. Ditto that, with Henry. Similarly, Walt should make peace with Nighthorse, though I think their differences should stay as is --one staunchly against development, the other seeing it as a way to forge a future for his people. One hopes Jacob can come up with ideas other than a casino to empower his people, as it would make for far more interesting TV.
A love interest? Yes, but it should be someone as independent as him. I was never sold on Donna as his ideal mate. Personally, I wish Margo Martindale were cast to play the overlooked good natured but tough smartypants and win his heart. For every line of John Donne he can quote, she can circle around with poetry line from Mary Oliver to Joy Harjo, bringing his poetry canon up to date.

I think that Walt should give his land to the Nature Conservancy, with the provision that he lives on it as long as he is alive.

I think Walt needs to consider - seriously consider - retirement in the penultimate season of this series. He still has not put the death of his wife into perspective, is unsure about his relationship with his female deputy, cannot treat his male deputy with anything resembling respect, and now has to deal with a major lawsuit because of his own non-criminal-but-very-ugly behavior toward his former nemesis, Barlow Connally and his estate's well-qualified and out-for-revenge legal team. Walt's denial of his situation does not bode well for his future.

His retirement would bring about all kinds of turmoil that could play out in the remaining episodes: who would replace him? What would happen to/with Vic? How would retirement impact Cady? And what about Jacob, Henry, Mathias, and the mayor? Walt has developed many relationships in his 20+ years as the sheriff and closing the door on his tenure - at least on television - would help close some of the loose ends.

I wonder if Walt will retire in Craig Johnson's future...?
