Why on earth did you put Alex and Meredith there? They aren’t in demand by fans because the Grey’s Anatomy fandom knows it would be incest and therefore they haven’t been hinted at either! Why can’t male female friendships on TV exist without you people immediately romanticizing them? In this particular case it’s gross, it was even said out loud on the show before that Alex Karev is the closest thing Meredith Grey has to a brother!

Hi there, I am one of the founders of CarterMatt. For your question as to who picks the nominees, it’s the entire staff at CarterMatt that agrees on the choices as a group. As for why there are people on this list that are not a couple it’s because this category is for “ships” and that is when fans want two people to be together even if it may not happen (and sometimes it does in later seasons!). We also have a “Best Couple” category this year that is not about “ships” and is about two people that are an on screen couple right now. I hope that clears up the confusion about this category.

Lizzington is real. It has been teased on the show and by writers/producers. It isnt something made up by fans. Just because Liz is going through her fake fantasy stage doesn’t mean her future is set. As with all shippers, we think there is always a chance for the pendulum to swing our way.

The act of “shipping” is quite often an act of opposition or rebellion against the narrative a TV show is trying to tell. “Kirk and Spock the most developed relationship on Star Trek!” “Yes they are!” “So they could totally be gay, right?” “Um… no… this is 1960’s TV after all…” and so the Kirk/Spock fandom took to fanfiction, where they could rebel against the heteronormative narrative they’re told was going on and make subtext the actual text of their stories. A ship doesn’t have to be together to make it a ship; it only has to exist in the minds of the shippers.
