While not all Canadian-produced TV series have done well in America (look at “Saving Hope” for an example), “Rookie Blue” has maintained itself as an example of solid ratings on both sides of the border over its three seasons — at least when you think about it in terms of a summer series.
With this in mind, it shouldn’t come as too great of a shock that ABC has made the decision to renew the show for another year. (Likewise, its station north of the border in Global TV has done the same exact thing.) Season 4 will go into production later this summer, and the Toronto-based series will air next year. Presumably, the order will be for 13 episodes — the same as past seasons of the show.
The ensemble cast is led by Missy Peregrym as a young officer trying to learn her way around the force. It’s part crime drama and part soap, and its hybrid nature has led to it developing a core audience of fans since its inception.
Hopefully, the network will be able to give the show some better support next year. Multiple episodes have been shifted thus far thanks to the NBA Finals, and its traditional Thursday night lead-in in “Duets” has been a commercial disappoint. Thus, the ratings for “Rookie Blue” have been down for much of this season.
Are you excited to see the show coming back?
