For those of you who did not get an opportunity to check out the stellar series premiere to “The Newsroom” on Sunday night, here’s some good news — HBO has just put up the entire episode for free online.
You can watch the video here, and this is obviously a move designed to get people who are not subscribers a chance to see just what they are missing out on. The show tried out a similar technique recently for their new series “Girls,” and it turned out to be a rousing success in that it got a widespread audience excited for what is at its core a very niche show. Will some YouTube viewers become eventual HBO subscribers? It’s certainly possible — and even if they don’t want to shell out the monthly fee, they may still want to buy the first season when it comes out on DVD.
For those a bit unfamiliar with the new show, “The Newsroom” revolves around a cable news anchor (Jeff Daniels) who is forced in some ways to reinvent his on-air persona after an opinion-fueled rant goes viral. Emily Mortimer plays his new executive producer who just so happens to also be his ex, and the supporting cast features the likes of Dev Patel, Alison Pill, and Olivia Munn, who will make her presence felt in the coming weeks. Aaron Sorkin (“The West Wing,” “The Social Network”) created the series and wrote the pilot.
If you haven’t watched the show yet, we highly recommend it — “The Newsroom” is one of the strongest premieres we have seen all year.
