We have some new casting scoop for “Dexter” today — but this time around, we are focusing on the past more so than the present.
According to show fan site Dexter Daily, child actress Savannah Paige Rae (“Parenthood”) is set to appear on the season 7 premiere of the show as a 5-year old version of Jennifer Carpenter’s Debra Morgan. As for a young Dexter, the part is reported to be going to newcomer Nicolas Vigneau.
This is hardly the first time that a young version of Michael C. Hall’s character has graced the show during its run. Maxwell Huckabee and Dominic James have each played the character at various times, and Devon Graye portrayed a teenage Dexter back during season 1. There has also been a young Debra (Laura Marano) and a teenage Debra (Haley King) who have each appeared on the show in the past.
As for context into why we are seeing some flashbacks now, we have a feeling that it will somewhat become linked to the major story of the season — how Deb manages to deal the sudden news that her adopted brother, who she is also (get your gag reflex ready) in love with, just so happens to be the man responsible for killing Travis Marshall. As for how much else she learns, that is really going to be up to what Dexter chooses to share with her. The flashbacks will probably be a means to further explain the extent of the pair’s relationship dating back to when they were kids, and Harry was first starting to really take Dexter under his wing.
Do you like seeing all of these flashbacks, or do you wish at times that “Dexter” would find a way to stay a bit more in the present? Be sure to check out some more of our season 7 coverage, including the tentative titles for the first five episodes following its September 30 return.
