‘American Idol’ season 12 spoilers: Erika Van Pelt’s brother auditions

Season 12 held auditions in Newark this weekend.

As it turns out, Colton Dixon and Phillip Phillips are not the only people on “American Idol” this season to have some rather musical siblings — the same can be said for Erika Van Pelt.

In a post on Twitter late Friday night, Van Pelt (who came in tenth place this past season and is now preparing for the tour) announced that someone rather close to her was going to be trying his hand at getting a golden ticket to Hollywood:

“Good luck to my brother @CollinVanPelt at #idolauditions in Jersey tomorrow!”

For those unfamiliar with the audition process on the show (the real one, that is), what happens is that the contestants all travel to take part in one of the giant cattle call auditions to sing for some of the show’s producers. They ultimate decide who is going to take off to sing in front of the judges, and these auditions are filmed in the fall. (This is why we can have auditions without knowing whether or not Jennifer Lopez is going to be coming back for another go.)

Just in case you want to hear what Collin sounds like, you can check out one of his YouTube videos below — and based on it alone, we think he’s going to really well. (He also helped himself in this video by performing a John Legend cover.) He’s got a nice, soulful low register — it almost sounds a little bit like what would happen if you combined Legend with a bit of Michael Buble.

Does this news already make you a little bit excited about season 12?
