When getting to an answer, sometimes you just have to connect the dots. In the case of the final season for “Fringe,” this appears to definitely be the case.
Ever since the season 4 finale first aired in May, we have been hearing whispers that the show will be using its landmark “Letters of Transit” episode as some sort of template for what we can expect to see moving forward. Now, we know that those whispers are really shouts from the top of the tallest building in town — not only will season 5 feature the same story, but there will also be a major time jump.
Speaking to TVLine at the Critics’ Choice Television Awards Monday night, John Noble (Walter) commented on the changes for the show’s final season by saying that his character (plus Olivia and Peter) are indeed going to be transported to the future:
“As far as I know, we’re just jumping ahead [to 2036] … In the Evil Observers-ruled 2036, Noble reminds, “Walter, Olivia, Astrid and Peter are insurgents, so we know all the dirty tricks that have been played against us. We’ll be learning from the past.”
While there is a rather large element of mystery when making a move this bold, the payoff could also be great — and by moving the series to the future, it provides a fresh look at what we have seen the characters work to create in the present (albeit in multiple universes at times) over the course of the past four seasons. Usually on shows, we have to visualize such things in our minds — what makes this so very interesting is that there is a 24-year gap for us to piece together and imagine instead.
