For me the whole 5th season felt disjointed & all over the place. Splitting it in half like AMC did made it even worse. The finale was a big let down & it made the show go out with a whimper. You could almost tell the writers/creators were done with this show at season 4 & season 5 was some kind of contractual obligatory afterthought. The first 4 seasons were really good tho.

I really like the ending, not perfect, but very satisfying. I think the crazy fight in the bar was the highlight of the finale for me. I loved how Bohannon didn't know where to go next. He gave the practical thing a try with taking Grant's offer, but as Durant so honestly put it these men are not your friends they will use you and spit you out. Custer being a smug bastard was the icing on the cake, Bohannon may have been like him once but the thought of being like him again made him sick to his very core. I also liked how Bohannon didn't give Durant up. Bohannon may be enemies with Durant but only he could understand what Durant went through to build the railroad, they were both railroad men in a room full of political vultures. Bohannon would have never made it in their world and he rightly chose to leave.

Eva not writing the book and riding into the sunset was good to see, she's finally free and has the confidence to go where she wants, Mickey throwing the old magic lantern slides away was his way of freeing himself from the past and moving on. Durant's final speech rang words of truth and was a great summary of the series. They did something truly special and nothing anyone can do or say can ever take that accomplishment away from them.

And finally Bohannon is free to follow his heart and do want he truly wants to ...... go find Mei. It doesn't matter if we know if he finds her or not but more importantly hes free to move on, life keeps on going. Bohannon your not an old man but your not young either, do what you want because life is too short for revenge.

I will miss Hell on Wheels but now its time for us all to move on as well, Bohannon you will be missed.
