‘Basketball Wives’: Shaunie O’Neal surprised by Royce Reed, other firings

The cast is changing before season 5.

Even though Shaunie O’Neal may serve as an executive producer on “Basketball Wives,” this alone does not mean that she is responsible for every decision that is made in regards to the show — and who stays for subsequent seasons.

As you may have heard by now, Royce Reed, Jennifer Williams, and Kesha Nichols were all recently dismissed from the show after its fourth season, and according to TMZ Shaunie was just as shocked as anyone to find out the news. After becoming rather opposed to the direction that production company Shed Media was heading in (especially when it comes to all of the fighting and screaming this past season), she is now kept largely away from some of the major decisions in regards to the cast.

Here is the kicker — Shaunie is now considering walking away from the series if changes are not made, though it is unclear just what sort of changes these would have to be. The unfortunate thing is that even if she is one of the reasons why this franchise exists to begin with, there’s really nothing that would stop VH1 from continuing on with the show without her (and it may even continue to draw similar ratings).¬†“Basketball Wives” has become one of the cable network’s most-popular tentpoles, even if it is constantly under fire for having a cast that spends more of their time fighting than actually getting anything accomplished.

Considering season 4 literally just wrapped up, we’re probably still going to be waiting for a while until any more firm decisions are made about which ex-wives wives are going to be joining the series next. Tell us — who do you want to see on the show, and would you still watch if Shaunie ended up leaving?
