Summer is a time when music-oriented awards shows are popular television, and one of them is happening north of the border in Canada. The MuchMusic Video Awards (or MMVAs, if you prefer) are a showcase for some of the best music both north of the border and all around the world.
This year, we have a feeling that this will be one of the most electric shows MuchMusic has ever put on. Why? Let’s just put it this way — they have Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Carly Rae Jepsen, and hosts LMFAO all performing within the span of a couple of hours. For Bieber, the show is a homecoming — he originally hails from the small Ontario town of Stratford, which is only a couple of hours away from the show’s Toronto setting. With that in mind, he has a tendency to pack the area downtown like nobody else as we jsut saw of his performance at the Today Show.
As for the rest of the international artists, it is really just all about providing a showcase for some of the best music out there. What we like about watching the MMVAs is that it always feels light-hearted and fast-paced, and there is little time wasted on somber rituals, product placement, or performances that nobody really cares about. It’s an awards show for the now, and not so much a three-hour ego trip where executives can pat themselves on the back for being awesome. There are also some pretty current presenters for awards — including the stars of such shows as “Glee” and “Pretty Little Liars.”
