We still have a couple of weeks to go until we see the top 20 perform for the first time on the “So You Think You Can Dance” live show, but isn’t it nice to know that they are being picked out as we speak?
On Friday, Nigel Lythgoe announced on Twitter that he and a number of the show’s other go-to judges — including Mary Murphy, Tyce Diorio, and a man whose movie in “Rock of Ages” is out today in Adam Shankman — are all currently filming the famous Green Mile segment where they will reveal just which dancers are moving on to the live shows, and who will be sadly leaving the competition before they have a chance to samba, tap, or break on the stage for America’s votes. It’s an exciting time, mostly because we can stop trying to focus on dozens of individual names and stories in favor of just a smaller group of incredibly talented young people.
The other great thing about Vegas Week and the Green Mile is that anything can happen. While there are some consistent favorites, one bad dance can ruin everything — and there’s always a chance that someone who barely made it through the audition rounds could break out and receive rave reviews, second chances do happen.
All we hope is that we see many of these judges again in the live shows. We won’t get by unless we hear Lil’ C say “Buck” or have Shankman dance around in the chair after he sees something that moves him on an incredibly deep level.
Who are your favorite dancers this season? While we don’t know if he can do anything beyond the shockingly moving “exorcism dance,” we admit that we are still rooting for Hampton Williams every second of the way.
