Ever since the very beginning of “Pretty Little Liars,” Emily’s dating life has drawn more discussion than that of pretty much any other character. Maybe it’s the fact that she is a lesbian, or that she and Maya developed one of the largest fanbases of any TV couple known to man — but to this day, no one can seemingly stop talking about what she is going to do next. (For the sake of the show, let’s hope it stays this way for some time.)
So when rumors started to form that Emily was going to get into a romance with Maya’s cousin Nathan (played by “The Vampire Diaries” alum Sterling Cooper), it’s fair to say that we saw the internet equivalent of faces melting off. On some level, though, it makes sense — Emily is bisexual in the books, and she has to be be looking for some sort of comfort in the wake of such tragedy.
Want some consolation? For people who want to see Emily remain interested solely in women, take these comments from executive producer Marlene King to AfterEllen.com as a way to stay calm:
“It’s not our intention. I want to choose my words really carefully here, because Emily is going through a period of mourning and loss and confusion, and she may make a decision or two that will take her on a winding road — but she definitely quickly comes back to her understanding of her sexuality.”
Even if Emily did become confused about her sexuality, it’s certainly realistic for it to happen — and it is also not the first time we would have seen this on TV. After all, remember that episode of “Glee” where Darren Criss’ Blaine got himself a little confused over Rachel? It was pretty terrible, yes — but it still happened.
What do you make of Emily’s sexuality on the show, and do you understand how she could be dealing with some confusion after everything that has happened to her?
