Would “Bones” exist without Booth? That is a question we (nor anyone else) hope to never be forced into answering. It’s like Starsky without Hutch — that is, if they hooked up and had a baby together.
The rumors started up on Wednesday that David Boreanaz could be leaving the Fox series after its eighth season on Wednesday, and it is all courtesy of a series of tweets that the actor uploaded suggesting that there will not be many more appearances from the show’s cast at San Diego Comic-Con:
“SDCC 2012 shld be a blast and quite possibly the last for
#Bones ? Farewell tour? Look forward to seeing everyone there … Let’s put this in sports terms. I’m a free agent after this season. So the Bones fair well tour is in full-swing.”
By saying that he is a “free agent,” Boreanaz is referencing the well-known fact that his contract is expiring next year, and he thus has the freedom to leave — however, we also have a feeling that he would want to stay and potentially finish up all the work that he and Emily Deschanel have put into making this show with Hart Hanson a huge success. It has one of the most dedicated fan bases in the business, and they have followed the series everywhere even in spite of time changes, shortened seasons, and even taking six full years to actually bring Booth and Brennan together as a couple.
In reality, the best way to describe what Boreanaz is up to is simply courtesy of the words “negotiation ploy” –it’s the same thing Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey did last year when they each expressed a desire to leave “Grey’s Anatomy.” They made it clear that they were willing to leave and interested in doing other things, and eventually they each got a raise and a contract that runs for two more seasons. While we don’t know if “Bones” would necessarily get a tenth year, a season 9 seems like a definite possibility considering the solid ratings coupled with the lack of other drama programming on the network with a consistent following.
Do you think there is any actual chance that Boreanaz will leave after season 8, and could this be a calculated plan for a substantial raise?
