‘Grey’s Anatomy’ creator rips ABC Family’s ‘Bunheads’ for lack of diversity

The series premiered this week.

ABC Family’s new series “Bunheads” got off ot a solid start following “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” earlier this week, but there is one parent who is not particularly happy about every element of the show — “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” creator Shonda Rhimes.

In a post on Twitter, Rhimes (who has used diversity of all kinds in just about every one of her shows) went after the new product of “Gilmore Girls” creator Amy Sherman-Palladino for having a cast built up entirely of young white women:

“Hey @abcfbunheads: really? You couldn’t cast even ONE young dancer of color so I could feel good about my kid watching this show? NOT ONE?”

Rhimes did praise “Bunheads” for using women who all have different body images, but stood by her point when pressed more by fans accusing her of being too harsh. There are some other shows on ABC Family without a lead of color, and they have yet to come under the same sort of harsh criticism.

Do you think that a show like “Bunheads” should really come under fire for something like race, or should this casting just be at the sole discretion of executives producers making the show that they want?
