2012 Tony Awards: Neil Patrick Harris, ‘The Book of Mormon’ open show

The show kicked off in grand fashion!

The 2012 Tony Awards promise to have a good many musical numbers included throughout, and they wasted no time on Sunday night in kicking things off with some fun — and some humor.

Rather than with Neil Patrick Harris, the show actually started off with a brilliant (and funny) performance from the company of “The Book of Mormon,” and then this transitioned into a bit from the “How I Met Your Mother” star — who declared the audience “50 Shades of Gay” before bringing on his own song-and-dance number.

The theme of Neil’s performance? “What if life was like theater.” There were celebrity cameos (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), nods to upcoming musicals (the revival of “Annie”), and some elaborate costume changes. It was a perfect set-up of the world of theater, and he also managed to give a smart satire on everyday life in the process.

What did you think about Neil’s opening for the show, and did you laugh at loud more than a few times?
