Warning: If you still have not watched Sunday night’s new episode of “Mad Men,” it’s certainly in your best interest to do so before reading this article.
If you are like us, then you are probably still reeling from the fact that Lane is no longer with us. Was it easy to see his demise coming? Sure, but the sheer horror of his actual death — with his body hanging lifelessly from a rope in his own office — may be one of the most terrifying scenes ever put on TV.
For actor Jared Harris, going out in such a shocking way was bittersweet. During a conference call on Monday, he explained that he was sad to be leaving the show, but knew the news was going to be bad for his character the moment executive producer Matthew Weiner brought him up to his office and poured him some brandy.
What was equally interesting about Lane’s death was the fact that he chose his office after his plan to do it in his brand-new Jaguar failed — and Harris described this act by saying the following:
“It was vindictive. He was angry, and [the act] was an expression of his anger. It was a passive-aggressive act. His choice of doing it there was a ‘f— you’ to the office, to the people who worked there, particularly to Don. And the passive side of that was the letter, with the boilerplate suicide note, which explained nothing.”
The season 5 finale of “Mad Men” airs Sunday night on AMC. Are you still as stunned as ever about what happened to Lane?
