On Saturday night, the final portion of the GLAAD Media Awards were held in San Francisco, and it allowed its host in “Glee” star Dianna Agron a chance to return to a city where she grew up during her childhood.
While the awards show was packed full of tender moments mixed with plenty of fun, there were a few specific TV honors handed out. The Golden Gate Award was presented to Shonda Rhimes for her commitment to promoting a positive image of the GLBT community on television. Her show in “Grey’s Anatomy” also picked up an award for Outstanding Drama Series, while “Days of Our Lives” scored some love as a daytime drama.
During Rhimes’ speech at the event, she also produced one memorable quote that spread around the internet like wildfire:
“I think LGBT rights are the civil rights movement of our time.”
Both “Grey’s” and Agron’s “Glee” will resume filming later this summer, and should return with new episodes in September pending some last-minute shake-up with the schedule.
Agron is also not the only “Glee” star to host a version of the GLAAD Awards, as Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera were the co-hosts for the show in New York earlier this year.
