If you thought that the world already had enough in the way of singing competitions, be prepared to think again.
NBC announced on Tuesday that they are green-lighting an all-new singing competition entitled “And the Winner Is,” which will combine a bit of music with a game show element where money is at stake. Here’s the basic premise — contestants (who can be individual singers or groups) perform in front of an audience, and do so by way of a duel similar to what we see on “The Voice” already. (This show is ironically from “Voice” creator John de Mol.)
The twist here is simple — in each round of the competition, a panel (led by some sort of celebrity) will eliminate the worst singer, but before this is even decided a contestant can decide to eliminate themselves for a sum of money. It’s basically a way to see just who is here to try and gain exposure (as well as a grand prize at the end), or who is going to just want some fast cash if they know they’ve been out-sung.
In a statement, NBC alternative programming head Paul Telegdy had this to say:
“We are thrilled to be working with John de Mol, the creator and one of the producers of The Voice, on this original singing game show that will feature a broad range of talent, dueling performers and the surprise of in-the-moment negotiations and decisions.”
Considering that this show sounds perfectly suited for the holiday season, are you okay with it — or would you have preferred “The Sing-Off” instead?
